Due to the Coronavirus outbreak the decision was made earlier this afternoon to cancel the O’Connor Cup championships which were due to take place this weekend in Kerry.

In line with Government announcements today on Covid 19 the Ladies Gaelic Football Higher Education Committee took the decision to cancel the entire event.

A statement early this morning revealed that the Giles Cup competition was suspended.

This was due to higher than average Covid 19 cases confirmed from the regions of the competing colleges.

Though in the statement this morning the other five competitions due to take place were still going ahead.

But those games had strict precautions in place from arrival to and from venues along with strict dressing room and feeding policy’s in place.

But later this afternoon after further information and guidelines issued by the Government, the decision was made to cancel the O’Connor Cup, Lynch Cup, Moynihan Cup, Donaghy Cup and Lagan Cup competitions also.

The O’Connor Cup weekend was due to take place in the Kerry GAA centre of excellence in Currans.

Friday and Saturday was to be a hive of activity with the semi-finals and finals of the various competitions taking place.

Below is the statement from the Ladies Gaelic Football Higher Education Committee

“In line with the Government announcement on Covid 19, the Higher Education Committee is cancelling the 2020 O’Connor Cup Championships in Kerry, effective immediately.

We understand that this decision will result in disappointment, especially amongst players and their backroom teams, especially when we are so close to concluding our championships but this is the right thing to do.

Our responsibility now is to ensure that we look after each other, our families and friends and that we all return to the playing fields when the time is right to do so.”
