A number of semi final pairings are now known after Wednesday nights club championship round 3 results
It was another Wednesday evening of high quality ladies football action and a number of semi final pairings are now known after Wednesday’s Dublin LGFA club championship round 3 results.
Senior Championship Group 1 Round 3 Results
There were two games in Group 1 of the senior championship this week. The meeting between Na Fianna and reigning champions Foxrock Cabinteely was the standout fixture.
Both sides entered the game with a win a piece from their opening game and it was a perfect opportunity for Na Fianna to gauge exactly how close a level they were to the championship favourites.
Foxrock had scored 6-15 in their opening fixture while Na Fianna found the back of the net nine times in their 9-09 to 2-06 win over Sylvesters last week.
Neither side were afforded the same goal scoring luxury on Wednesday night and Foxrock had to suffice with just a single goal in the game, while Na Fianna failed to find the back of the Cabinteely net.
In the end after an absorbing contest Foxrock returned to familiar territory at the top of the group table thanks to a 1-14 to 0-11 win.
The other Group game involved St Sylvesters and Thomas Davis who were both seeking to claim their first championship points of 2020.
Hosts Sylvesters had suffered two heavy defeats in rounds one and two against Clontarf and Na Fianna and with their final group game in two weeks time a tough away assignment against defending champions Foxrock Cabinteely this was probably their best chance of claiming a win.
Thomas Davis though would have also seen this game as an opportunity to get two points on the board and although they were comprehensively beaten by Foxrock in round one, their performance last week against Clontarf would have lifted their confidence heading into this one.
And that boost in confidence did the trick as Davis had eleven points to spare at the finish to claim their first win of the club championship by 1-21 to 0-13.
Senior Championship Group 2 Round 3 Results
Group 2 of the Senior championship was still very much open heading into Wednesday nights games. Ballyboden St Endas sat at the top of the table with two wins from two but were not in action this week.
Last years finalists Kilmacud Crokes held second place with a win in round one to their name and played host to a Fingallians side also with a win under their belts.
Crokes though very much have their eyes on a return to the final and followed up last weeks comprehensive win over Clanna Gael Fontenoy with another commanding performance to dispatch the Swords outfit by 1-18 to 0-08 and leapfrog Ballyboden into top spot.
The second game in the group pitted the two teams still to record a win. Ringsend was the venue for the meeting between Clanna Gael Fontenoy and St Brigids.
Clanna Gael had suffered a seven point loss to Ballyboden in round one and followed that with a nineteen point defeat at the hands of Crokes.
Their opponents St Brigid although also pointless had lost both of their games by narrow margins. In round one a single goal was all that separated them from Fingallians with the game finishing 2-09 to 1-09.
Last week they took on Ballyboden St Endas in Russell Park and once again after a thrilling game, they came out the wrong side of the contest with the final score 3-15 to 3-11.
With the contrast in losing margins between both sides Brigids would have been seen as slight favourites to claim their first win of the campaign.
But Clanna Gael Fontenoy were not interested in following that script and brought all of their battling qualities to the game to secure, after a tense sixty minutes, a one point win on a scoreline of 3-12 to 4-08.
Intermediate Championship Group 1 Round 3 Results
The teams to emerge from Group 1 of the Intermediate championship had already been decided before Wednesday’s games.
Cuala and Castleknock after two wins each had already progressed to the semi finals and both sides met in a game that would determine which of the teams topped the table and thus decide which team from Group 2 they would face in the semi finals.
And after a highly entertaining and high scoring game it was Cuala who prevailed by a single score with the final score 4-11 to 3-11.
The second group game pitted Skerries Harps against Man O War. Both sides were pointless heading into the game and their championship aspirations extinguished with last weeks losses.
With the pressure off the two teams put on an entertaining game with plenty of scores but it was Skerries who claimed the spoils by 4-14 to 2-07 to finish on a high.
Intermediate Championship Group 2 Round 3 Results
One semi final place had already been secured last week in Group 2 by St Maurs who claimed their second win in a row against Parnells.
This week they hosted a pointless Lucan Sarsfields side propping up the table after defeats to Parnells and Clann Mhuire in the previous rounds.
With the pressure off Lucan and St Maurs with one eye already on the semi finals it was Sarsfields who claimed their first championship points by 3-11 to 0-08.
All eyes were on the other game in the group as Clann Mhuire and Parnells went toe to toe for the remaining semi final spot.
The Naul was the venue for the winner takes all encounter and the high stakes game didn’t disappoint as both teams slugged it out to prolong their championship journey to the knockout stages.
The Coolock outfit have proven to be formidable scorers and it was their ability to get in behind the Clann Mhuire defence to create goal chances which proved decisive as they raised five green flags on the night in their 5-13 to 2-12 win to claim top spot in the group and more importantly a place in the semi finals.
Junior A Championship Round 3 Results
Heading into the final round of Group 1 games three teams were still in the running to reach the semi’s of the competition.
Ballinteer St Johns were in top spot on four points, St Judes were in second place also on four points and sitting in third place just a point behind were Raheny.
St Judes were favorites to claim one of the semi final places as they faced a trip in their final group game to face bottom of the table Garda/Westmanstown Gaels.
And that proved to be the case as the team from Tymon North easily dispatched their opponents by 5-18 to 1-04.
The big game in the group was in St Annes Park with Raheny hosting Ballinteer St Johns with the winner of the game heading to the semi’s while the losers would have to park their title dreams for another year.
Raheny have the ability to rack up large scoring returns as was apparent in their two opening games as they returned 3-23 in round one and 3-11 in round two.
Ballinteer though are also adept at keeping the scoreboard ticking over with a return of 3-12 and 4-18 in the previous rounds.
Scoring though is only one aspect of the game and on Wednesday night Ballinteer proved they are also very well drilled in the defensive side of the things as they held Raheny to just 1-04 on the night while shooting 3-17 at the other end to claim top spot in the table and a semi final appearance next week.
Junior A Championship Group 2 Round 3 Results
The only decision to be finalised in Group 2 was which team finished in first and second spot in the table with Naomh Barrog and O’Dwyers securing their semi final spots last week.
Both sides met on Wednesday in Pairc Barrog to determine table positions and also the bragging rights of an unbeaten record heading into the semi’s.
In what was a fairly even contest the home side came away with the win thanks to three goals in a low enough scoring game which finished 3-06 to 1-07.
Templeogue Synge Street welcomed the visit of Ballyboden St Endas B to Bushy Park for their final group game.
Both sides were yet to experience that winning feeling in this year’s championship. In the end it was Templeogue who picked up the three points on offer with an eleven point win by 2-14 to 2-03.
