Former Dublin Hurling Legend Ryan O’Dwyer gets the Laochra Gael treatment in TG4’s new series in the new year

Ryan O'Dwyer - Laochra Gael

Two years ago, Ryan O’Dwyer called time on his inter county hurling career. The star left the Dublin set up he’d first participated in back in 2010. And the animated hurler will feature in the brand new series of Laochra Gael on TG4 in 2021.

In it’s 19th series, Laochra Gael returns to screen on January 7th. O’Dwyer will feature in episode 2 on January 14th. The series has proved hugely popular over the years, and in this new batch of episodes, the format travels beyond the white lines of battle and into a more personal storyline.

From Tipperary to Dublin Legend

13 years ago, O’Dwyer made his Senior Hurling Debut for his native Tipperary in the National Hurling League against Kilkenny and in the same year debuted in the Senior Championship. A year later O’Dwyer was pivotal for Tipp clinching the Allianz Hurling League title and Munster Senior Hurling Championship with a 2-21 to 0-19 victory over Clare in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. Unfortunately for Tipp, they met Waterford, who they had avoided in the provincial competition, in the All Ireland Semi Final, only to lose out to the Deise by 0-02.

In 2010 Ryan played football for Tipperary, but hurling was always his first love and at the end of that year, he declared for Dublin, who at that time were under the watchful eye of Clare native Anthony Daly. He quickly made his mark, helping the Dubs to Walsh Cup success beating Kilkenny in the final. The boys in blue would do a number on Kilkenny a couple of months later, beating them in the Allianz League final, with Dublin claiming their first league title since the 1930’s.

In 2013, Dublin would clinch their first Leinster Senior Hurling title in 52 years, with O’Dwyer scoring three from play, in one of Dublin’s finest hurling performances, beating Galway 2-25 to 2-13 in front of over 36,000 fans in Croke Park.

Potential end to a career

Ryan’s career took a major blow in 2015 when he was the victim of an assault in Birmingham, leaving him hospitalised with a broken jaw, fractured skull and sever bleeding on the brain, with Dublin fans wondering if they’d ever see their edgy forward in the blue jersey again. But in 2016 Ryan returned to training with the Senior Hurlers and never looked back. He was even on hand to assist Johnny McGuirk in 2016 with the Dublin Minor Hurlers.
