Dublin 1-22
Westmeath 0-17
Cusack Park, Mullingar

There’s no better way to get a season up and running than a win on the road. And that’s exactly what a young Dublin Hurling panel did for Mattie Kenny this afternoon in Mullingar in their first Walsh Cup fixture.

After an initially bright start from the hosts, Westmeath will rue the 1-07 Dublin scored unanswered to go from 0-05 to 0-02 down to 0-05 to 1-07 up with Ballyboden St. Endas Aidan Mellett hitting the net in the 15th.

Oisín O’Rourke had converted two frees and a point form Donal Burke saw Dublin draw level with their opponents before Mellett found the net. Mark Schutte, David Keogh, Lorcan McMullan and and Burke hit the next four scores giving them a seven point advantage. but they grew even stronger as the half continued, with O’Rorke, Burke and McMullan grabbing a brace of scores each to finish the first half ahead by 1-15 to 0-09.

To their credit Westmeath improved after the break with the outstanding Eoin Price notching seven points in total. But Shane O’Brien’s side were dealt a blow when Joey Boyle was dismissed on 53rd minutes. And from there Dublin took control to play out the remainder of the game clock.
