A massive game this afternoon for the Dublin hurlers in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
Laois v Dublin
Sunday, July 7th. 4:15pm
O’Moore Park, Portlaoise
Under Pat Gilroy, Dublin just missed out on an All Ireland Senior Hurling slot after a last round loss to Galway. But this year they turned the tables, beating the Tribesmen in the final round. A Leinster Final place would have been the ultimate goal for Mattie Kenny’s squad. But they settle for a seat at the table in today’s preliminary qualifier.
2017 was the last time Dublin saw any All Ireland action, and interestingly that qualifier was against today’s opponents, Laois. That 2-28 to 1-15 win saw Dublin face Tipperary in another qualifier, but that was where their journey ended.
This year, with wins over Carlow and Galway, and a drawn game against Wexford, it was enough to see Dublin qualify for their chance to reach an All Ireland Quarter Final. And should they be successful against Laois today, Tipperary will again await them.
Having beaten Laois twice already, in both Walsh Cup and League action, Dublin would be confident enough today after some memorable provincial performances. But Laois have been equally impressive in the Joe McDonagh Cup and are duly deserving of this qualifier slot.
Dublin have made two changes to the side that beat Galway in the last round of the Leinster Championship. James Madden replaces the injured Eoghan O’Donnell. Elsewhere Ronan Hayes slots into the full forward line in place of Liam Rushe.
A win for Dublin this afternoon will see them through to the All Ireland Quarter Final against Tipperary on July 14th.
