Reigning County Champions St. Vincents and Mobhi Road’s Na Fianna opened their respective group campaigns with wins in the 2018 Dublin Senior Football Championship in last night’s double header in Parnell Park.

St. Vincents 5-19
Skerries Harps 1-09

The men from Marino settled back in where they left off after last year’s Championship win with a more than convincing win over Skerries in the first of the fixtures.

In a game that was all but wrapped up at half time, Tomas Quinn and Cormac Diamond landed two goals each, leading 4-11 to 0-07 at the break. Harps had been bright to start but Quinn’s two goal within the first fifteen minutes sent their opponents reeling, as Vincents put an early stranglehold on the game.

Harry Dawson and Stephen Smith had got Skerries up and running, but in the sixth a run by Diamond played Quinn on for his first. Gavin Burke, Ger Brennan and Diamond tacked on points to further worsen things for Harps, as Vincents grew and grew.

On fifteen minutes Lorcan Smyth did the ground work for Quinn for his second green flag of the night. By the end of the half Shane Carthy had pounced on a saved attempt by Nathan Mullins and Cormac Diamond had secured his own after setting Quinn up earlier.

Harps didn’t let their heads drop and they did manage to reduce the deficit with Dawson slamming home a penalty after a foul on Doanl McIlgorm. But sadly this game was all but over.

With Quinn and Varley replaced in the 42nd, things quietened and slowed to a canter for Vincents, and a late flourish of scores saw them comfortably over the line. Diamond charged through for his second goal of the night. And with Burke and Carthy adding to the tally it was done with 21 points to spare.

Scorers for St Vincent’s: Cormac Diamond 2-03, Tomás Quinn 2-02 (1f), Shane Carthy 1-03 (2f), Enda Varley 0-04, Gavin Burke 0-03, Ger Brennan, Lorcan Galvin, Lorcan Smyth 0-01 each.

Scorers for Skerries Harps: Harry Dawson 1-02 (2f), Steven Smith, Kevin Gilmore 0-02 each, Gerry Daly, Shane Hickey, Bryan Cullen 0-01 each.

Na Fianna 3-9
Lucan Sarsfields 1-10

Three second half goals saw Na Fianna, who will face St. Vincents in their next fixture, soar to victory over Lucan Sarflelds in the second game of the double header.

Conor McHugh, Darragh Kennedy and Sean Caffrey all found the net to help pull away after a close and tense first half.

Lucan had started the better and made their intentions clear with two opening scores and a goal from Harry Ladd in the 8th minute. Na Fianna rallied to go ahead 0-06 to 1-02 but Lucan dug deep and held their opponents scoreless between the 18th and 24th minute, adding a couple themselves to go into the break up by a score on 1-04 to 0-06.

The second half was tense and heated with so much at stake. Brendan Gallagher got Lucan’s first score on 35, but it wasn’t long before Na Fianna shifted gears to get themselves back into the game.

Conor McHugh tied the game in the 42nd , rolling the ball into the net, and 8 minutes later he set up Darragh Kennedy for Na Fianna’s second, after Connor Gallagher had again put Lucan ahead. Caffrey added another score for Na Fianna to put 0-03 between the sides.

Lucans attempts to close the gap saw the clock run down and when Caffrey hit the net in additional time it was all that was needed for Na Fianna to run out victors in a massively hard fought contest.

Scorers for Na Fianna: Sean Caffrey 1-03, Glenn O’Reilly 0-05 (2f), Conor McHugh, Darragh Kennedy 1-00 each, Aaron Byrne 0-01.

Scorers for Lucan Sarsfields: Connor Gallagher 0-05 (2f), Harry Ladd 1-00, Brendan Gallagher, Darren Gavin 0-02 each, John McCormack 0-01.
