Kilmacud Crokes 1-08

St Jude’s defeated Kilmacud Crokes in tonight’s second Dublin SFC quarter final in Parnell Park by three points after an incident packed second half.

Jude’s had dominated the first half and led by five at the break. Kilmacud reduced that deficit just after the restart with a Paul Mannion free, but back came Judes with points from a Kevin McManamon free and an excellent score from Kieran Doherty.

A minute later Crokes got themselves back in the contest when substitute Pat Burke palmed the ball to the back of the Jude’s net and it was game on. Jude’s responded with a Niall Coakley free and then the game got a bit feisty with a couple of flash points occurring in different areas of the pitch as the game threatened to boil over.

And boil over it did in the nineteenth minute when St Jude’s Ross O’Brien received a red card for a strike off the ball. Mark Vaughan scored a point from the resultant free kick.

Three minutes later and Pat Burke’s eventful cameo for Kilmacud came to an abrupt end when he was shown a black card for a third man block.

With four minutes left on the clock Mark Vaughan scored an excellent point from play to leave two points between the sides and the large crowd buckled in for a grandstand finish.

But Jude’s were not going to be denied tonight and Ronan Joyce pushed their lead back out to three points again with a fine score. Back came Crokes and Ross O’Carroll now abandoning his defensive role and adding his weight to the attack scored a corker of a point from the right hand sideline.

It was left to the best player on the pitch tonight, Kevin McManamon, to have the last say with a well taken injury time free. Kilmacud did have one last attack but they needed a goal to take the game to extra time, but Jude’s stood firm and deserved their three point win.
