We take a closer look at the Senior 2 Football Championship Groups for this year
Last night we brought you the details of this year’s Senior 1 group draw, which is sure to throw up some interesting opening day battles in April. So today we’ll give you a better look at this years Dublin Senior 2 Football Championship. Round Towers Lusk were the Intermediate Champions last year so they are promoted to Senior 2. Parnells conceded relegation from Senior 1 and this year will face Senior 2 opposition. Here’s all the details…
Dublin Senior 2 Football Championship
Round Towers Clondalkin and Fingallians in Group 1 again in 2019. Towers finished top last year with three wins from three and advanced to the knockout stages. It was short lived as eventual finalists St. Mary’s of Saggart were victorious over the Clondalkin side in the Quarter Finals on a 0-17 to 1-13 scoreline. They’ll start their campaign this year with a tie against St. Maurs. And Maurs will be looking for a better campaign, finishing bottom of Group 4 last year without a win.
Fingallians, who made the Semi Finals, but also lost to St. Mary’s, start their Group games against Cuala. The Dalkey side finished top of Group 4 and it sees them paired with St. Maurs again. Cuala got past Naomh Mearnog in last year’s Quarter Finals, but lost to Thomas Davis who went on to capture the Senior 2 title.
St. Anne’s and Erins Isle will square off in Round 1, as will Naomh Mearnog and Templeogue Synge Street. Anne’s and Mearnogs were in the three team Group 3 together last year with Anne’s finishing bottom. The Portmarnock side’s win over Anne’s was to be their only win in the group, but it got them to the Quarter Finals, were they were eventually beaten by Cuala.
Templeogue Synge Street fell to Fingallians in last year’s Quater Final having finished second in Group 4 behind Cuala. Erins Isle failed to reach the knockout stages, so you can be guaranteed that will be their aim for this year.
Newly promoted Round Towers of Lusk will start their Group 3 journey off against St. Pat’s of Palmerstown. Pats ended their Championship last year in third spot in Group 1 above Fingal Ravens. But in the four team group it wasn’t enough to advance any further. Winners of this group last year, Naomh Olaf went out in the Quarters to Thomas Davis last year and they’ll get up and running against Whitehall Colmcille.
Whitehall were paired with Templeogue last year and finished just below them in third spot. And they’ll look to get off on the right foot against Naomh Olaf.
Relegated from Senior 1 last year after conceding the play offs, Parnell start life in Senior 2 with an opener against St. Mary’s of Saggart. A tougher game you couldn’t ask for, with Mary’s finishing runners up in 2018. The Coolock side were without a solitary win last season, with Mary’s winning two of their three round games, and making it all the way to the finals.
St. Peregrines had a bad 2018, finishing bottom of Group 1. Fingal Ravens shared that luck in Group 2. And these two sides will start this year facing off. With neither team registering a win in the 2018 Championship, it’s all a plus if they fair better this season.
As with the Senior 1 Competition the Senior 2 Championship is expected to get underway in the week ending April 14th
