In the three Championship games that Dublin’s Senior Footballers have contested so far, dead ball specialist Dean Rock is currently leading the pack in this year’s GAA/GPA Golden Boot.
To say Dean is currently on a great run of form would be slightly understating his year. The Ballymun Kickhams man has amassed a score of 31 on the leaderboard; 1-05 scored from play and a stunning 0-23 from the placed ball.
Rock has been Dublin’s top scorer in each of their Leinster encounters.
Against Laois in Nowlan Park he scored 1-10, 0-06 of those from frees.
At the end of June, Dublin’s meeting with Meath in the Semi Final saw Dean add another 0-10 to the tally, 0-09 of them from the dead ball.
And last weekend, against Westmeath in Dublin’s sixth consecutive Leinster Championship success, he again led the way with 0-08, accurately scoring 0-07 either off the ground or from his gloves.
What’s interesting about the list of 10 players currently leading the scoring in the country is all but three of those names are now finished for the season and will add no mores scores to their account.
Sticking around for now are Ciaran Murtagh from Roscommon and James Kielt from Derry. And with both Roscommon and Derry playing Clare and Tipperary respectively tomorrow for a Quarter Final spot, they’ll have the chance to increase their personal stats.
And once we get to the end of July and all four Quarter Finals pairings have been decided, there will surely be new names joining this elite list of scorers.
But for now and hopefully at the end of the summer, we’ll still be seeing Dublin’s master free specialist above the chasing pack.
