Na Fianna Outplay Sylvesters In Championship Opener

By April 14, 2019 No Comments

Na Fianna 3-14
St. Sylvesters 0-9

Na Fianna were far too strong for St Sylvester’s in yesterday’s Senior Championship Group 1 encounter at Headquarters in Donnycarney. Despite playing into against a heavy breeze in the opening half the Mobhi Road men were impressive in setting up their eventual 0-14 winning margin. Their sheer pace and precision was on point, and by the half time whistle they were looking into the second half on a 2-08 to 0-05 maring.

Conor McHugh collected his own rebound off the post to fire to the net getting his side off to a perfect start. David Lacey followed that with a free and a 45′ landing 1-2 to 0-0 lead. Micheál McCarthy got Sylvesters back into the game. But sadly he was their only forward to really trouble Na Fianna in the whole game.

Meanwhile James Doran, Aaron Byrne, Lacey and McHugh had the Malahide side constantly on the back foot. Na Fianna’s second goal came in the 11th minute when Doran ran down the throat of the Sylvesters defence, flicking the ball inside to Aaron Byrne who gunned it to the net despite the efforts of keeper Michael Shiel.

By the break Na Fianna were 0-09 better off and pushed the game out of Sylvesters reach four minutes into the second half. Lacey raised a green flag off his left from close range following some great link up play between McHugh and Seán Caffrey.

Sylvesters battled to the finish, but they never caused any threat as Na Fianna continually closed down the direct route to goal. The Malahide side finished the match with 13 men after Mark Hazley and Jack Hazley were dismissed late in the second half.

Na Fianna now face Kilmacud Crokes in two weeks’ time, with Sylvesters will play Ballymun Kickhams.
