A strong showing in the second half of today’s first Quarter Final match up saw reigning champions Kilmacud Crokes shut down Clontarf to advance to this year’s Dublin Senior 1 Semi Finals.

The Clontarf men had a slender lead of 0-07 to 0-06 at the break but the introduction of Dublin star forward Paul Mannion at half time lifted the game for the Stillorgan side outscoring their opponents by ten points to one.

Mannion made his presence felt immediately on the throw in scoring two points to push Crokes in front by 0-08 to 0-07.

Jack McCaffrey was shown a straight red card for a late challenge, and Clontarf folded up. Crokes bagged eight unanswered points, and substitute Darragh Jones almost found the net, but Clontarf keeper Ross O’Hanlon save the shot and his side’s blushes.

Three minutes into additional time Kieran McKeown scored Clontarf’s only score of the half, highlighting his sides performance after losing the centre back McCaffrey. Which was a stark contrast to the opening half.

Definitely a game of two halves

Clontarf were the more knitted side in the opening exchanges, with Ciaran Brennan, Declan Monaghan and McKeown giving them a 0-03 to 0-00 lead over the county champions within ten minutes. They too had their goal opportunity when Kevin Lillis played McKeown on in the second minute but it was dealt with calmly by David Nestor in the Crokes goal.

Corner forward Lillis got two of his own with Tarf leading by 0-07 to 0-05 on 30 minutes. But that would be their last score until the dying seconds of today’s game.

Crokes advance and will meet Thomas Davis, who saw off the challenge of Castleknock in the second of today’s football games.
