NUI Galway v University College Dublin
Saturday, February 17th. 3:30pm
Trinity GAA Pitch, Santry.
UCD and NUI Galway have certainly earned their spot in the final of this year’s HE GAA Sigerson Cup Final and at 3:30pm this afternoon they’ll square off in Santry for what’s expected to be a massive contest between the Dublin and Galway college sides.
NUI’s massive win over IT Sligo in Round 1 set the tone for what has been, as always, a hugely competitive tournament. UCD travelled to Maynooth for their first round encounter, finishing 12 scores clear on 2-15 to 1-06.
UC Cork and DCU Dóchas Éireann advanced as the two Quarter Final opponents for today’s finalists, having beaten Garda College and DkIT respectively in their opening round games. NUI left Mardyke with 0-05 to spare against UC and in a Dublin College Derby, it was UCD who overcame DCU 0-16 to 1-09 at DCU’s Sports Campus.
So onto this week, and Wednesday was Semi Final evening for both sides. UCD travelled to Iniskeen to face Ulster University and after a hair raising contest, which brought the game to extra time, the Dublin college eventually squeezed out the victory by 0-18 to 1-13. NUI and DIT were equally as close but the Galway side finished with 0-03 to spare on 2-12 to 0-15.
This afternoon sees NUI Galway in the final for the first time in 15 years. UCD were winners of the competition 2 years ago, ending a 20 year spell for the Dublin college. And there will be the usual smattering of inter county stars on display in Santry.
Galway captain Damien Comer and midfielder Peter Cooke will line out for NUI Galway, while UCD of course boast Dublin’s Con O’Callaghan along with Mayo’s Stephen Coen and Kerry midfield duo Jack Barry and Barry O’Sullivan.
