Not at all for the faint hearted but some of Dublin’s All Ireland winning Footballers were cajoled into giving the massive crowd in Smithfield Plaza a few bars from songs on Sunday evening.
Dean Rock, Kevin McManamon, Brian Fenton and Cormac Costello all displayed their singing prowess in different ways to entertain us all.
First up, Dean Rock dedicated his song choice to Sam Maguire and got the crowd singing the classic KC and The Sunshine Band’s “Give It Up” to a rapturous reception.
Next up, a somewhat more experienced Kevin McManamon treated the blue army to a rendition of Vance Joy’s “Riptide” and was even accompanied by the house band.
Brian Fenton, who seemed a little the worse for wear, kept things traditional and crowd pleasing with a few bars of “Molly Malone”.
But, just like the All Ireland Final game itself, the best was kept until last as Dublin’s three point hero Cormac Costello put his own twist on the proceedings. It wasn’t quite clear at first what the Whitehall Colmcille’s man was attempting to sing, but eventually getting to the chorus it became evident, as Cormac finally found his note to belt out the Andrea Bocelli classic “Time To Say Goodbye”, much to the delight of his team mates and the swelling crowd.
Every All Ireland celebration we are treated to some great moments, and there’s no reason why these will become very fond memories in the capital.
