Dublin 1-22 Monaghan 1-11
Allianz Football League Round 7
April 5th, 2015
Two years ago, this same weekend, Dublin and Monaghan squared off in St. Tiernach’s Park in the final round of the Allianz Football League.
Monaghan had beaten Kerry the previous week and had massive confidence welcoming Dublin to Clones for the first time since 2011, but Dublin had other plans for the Farney County
Within minutes of throw-in Monaghan trailed by five, their blanket defence torn to shreds by Jack McCaffrey who combined with Dean Rock to lay on a goal chance that was well taken by the debuting Brian Fenton, a late replacement for Ciaran Kilkenny.
While Monaghan fought hard, they couldn’t break through. Vinny Corey had a goal chance one on one with Stephen Cluxton but Rory O’Carroll threw himself in the way to stop the danger. At the other end Paul Flynn’s green flag opportunity was evaded by keeper Rory Beggan.
Dublin pulled bodies behind the ball forcing Monaghan to take shots from distance, which failed and the Dubs were better on the counter. Monaghan were held scoreless for 25 minutes of the second period and the Dubs continued to extend their lead.
Not even some late scores and a consolation goal for Darren Hughes could save Monaghan’s blushes. But results in other games meant these two sides would meet again the following week for the semi final of the League Campaign.
