We’ve a busy weekend ahead as this year’s Go Ahead Dublin Senior 1 Football Championship throws in

Go Ahead Senior Football Championship

The dust has well and truly settled on the 2022 All Ireland Senior Football Championship on the Inter County stage. And Club supporters are chomping at the bit for what is expected to be a hotly contested Club Football Championship. Tomorrow evening that action gets underway in the Go Ahead Dublin Senior 1 Football Championship.

Over tomorrow and Saturday, eight games over four Senior 1 Groups will played out in the usual three stage Round Robin set up. As always, hte top two teams from each group will advance to compete in the knockout stage beginning at the Quarter Finals. The bottom team in each group will play off with two losing sides facing relegation.

Senior 1 Club Football Championship
Group 1
Templeogue Synge Street v Ballinteer St Johns
Saturday, August 6th. 3:45pm. O’Toole Park
Kilmacud Crokes v Raheny
Saturday, August 6th. 5:30pm. Parnell Park

Templeogue Synge Street made the breakthough to the Senior 1 Championship, having finished as Runners Up in last year’s Senior 2 competition being promoted. And they’ll be pleased with the Group they’ve been drawn in, albeit alongside last year’s Champions Kilmacud Crokes. They face Ballinteer St. Johns in their opening game. Ballinteer finished 3rd in Group 2 last year behind Kilmacud Crokes and Castleknock, so will look to improve and challenge for a knockout slot.

Champions Kilmacud Crokes start their title defence hoping to match their unbeaten run in 2021. Crokes never dropped a point in the rounds and battled hard through the knockouts to see off St. Judes in the Championship decider by a solitary point. On Saturday they face Raheny who didn’t make it out of Group 1 last year. They picked up one win against Whitehall, drawing with Ballyboden and losing to Na Fianna in their final round.

Group 2
Ballymun Kickhams v Clontarf
Friday, August 5th. 7:30pm. Parnell Park
Ballyboden St. Endas v Cuala
Saturday, August 6th. 5:30pm. Parnell Park

Ballymun Kickhams get the ball rolling in this year’s Championship in one of two Friday throw ins. Last year they topped the Group 3 table. But they were left stunned by a one point loss to Lucan Sarsfields in the last eight when expected to advance further in the competition. They start their 2022 campaign with a Parnell Park fixture against Clontarf. Clontarf were Group 3 opponents of Ballymun last year, and avoided relegation by seeing off St. Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh in a play off.

Last year’s Senior 2 Champions Cuala cut their cloth in this year’s Senior 1 Championship facing beating Semi Finalists Ballyboden St. Endas. Cuala went unbeaten in the second string competition in 2021 beating Templeogue Synge Street by 3 points in the Senior 2 decider, and will enjoy going toe to toe with Senior 1 opponents in 2022.

Group 3
Thomas Davis v Na Fianna
Saturday, August 6th. 3:45pm. Parnell Park
St. Judes v Skerries Harps
Saturday, August 6th. 5:00pm. Balgriffin

Thomas Davis enjoyed a good run in last year’s campaign after losing to Ballymun in the opening Round in Group 3 last year, they scored wins over Clontarf and Skerries Harps to set up a Quarter Final spot. But sadly they were undone by eventual finalists St. Judes in the last eight clash. They’ll face Judes again this year but not before squaring off against Na Fianna on Saturday. Na Fianna have been quarter finalists for at least the last four seasons and will be looking to build further on that progress.

St. Judes were the bounce of a ball away from lifting the the Senior 1 title last year, and were semi finalists the previous 2 seasons. They shared the top spot in Group 4 with Lucan, eventually beating them in the Semi Finals to reach their decider against. And they get up and running against Skerries Harps this weekend. Skerries failed to build on their 2020 Quarter Final slot last year, not advancing to the knockouts so that must be their minimum target.

Group 4
Lucan Sarsfields v Castleknock
Friday, August 5th. 7:30pm. Monastery Road
Round Towers Lusk v Whitehall Colmcille
Saturday, August 6th. 5:00pm. Garristown

Lucan Sarsfields went from avoiding relegation in 2018 to beaten semi finalists last year, so will be looking to replicate that form or better this season. They’ll know that Castleknock are a team not to be taken lightly tomorrow night as they square off at Monastery Road. Castlknock qualified for the Quarter Finals last year coming out of Group 2 as runners up. But they couldn’t get past Ballyboden St. Endas in the Quarter Finals. They’ll be aiming for a winning start tomorrow night.

Whitehall Colmcille beat St. Vincents last year to avoid relegation and save their Senior 1 status. They be facing Round Towers Lusk on Saturday in the opening Round in Group 4. Round Towers have battled hard since being promoted to Senior 1 as Senior 2 Champions in 2019. They recorded their only win last year against St. Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh in the opening round. So there will be work to do for both sides in this tie.

We’ll be back on Sunday to round up all the weekend’s Senior 1 Football results and look ahead to The third round of the Senior Hurling Championship the following weekend.
