Dublin 2-18
Dub Stars 2-15
St Vincent’s GAA Club was the venue for the annual Dublin Bus/Herald Dub Stars Football and Hurling challenge games.
The footballers got the afternoons action underway and served up an entertaining encounter with Dublin prevailing despite a spirited comeback from the Dub Stars team.
The Dubs Stars settles into the game quickly and by the 18th minute of the first half led by 0-06 to 0-03 with three points from Tomás Quinn with two from frees and the other a nice finish from open play.
Niall Coakley scored a brace and Jason Whelan chipped in with a fine point. The Dublin replies came from a free by Shane Carthy who impressed throughout and a point a piece from Emmett O’Conghaile and Adam Rogers.
But the game was turned on its head in a seven minute spell as Dublin notched an unanswered 2-02 to take control of the game with both goals scored by Aaron Byrne who looks a star in the making.
Those goals allowed Dublin take a six point lead into the break with the score 2-08 to 0-08. Halfway through the second half it looked like the young Dublin side were going to cruise to the finish as they hit eight points in a row with no reply coming from the Dubs Stars.
But they dug deep and the comeback started with a goal from Jason Whelan and although Dublin hit the next two points scored by Ryan Deegan and Colin Doyle, the Dub Stars dominated the closing stages and plundered 1-07 in the final ten minutes.
The Dub Stars goal was scored by the ever industrious Pat Burke, but it wasn’t enough and Dublin held on to win by three points.
