Dublin 0-07 Waterford 0-11

David Herity’s Dublin Senior panel fell short against Waterford this afternoon in a tough, hard fought affair.

Beth Carton was to be Waterford’s linch pin, scoring 0-09 of the sides 0-11 points on a very wet and windy day in Parnell’s.

With Dublin having the wind advantage, an Ali Maguire free in the first five minutes got Dublin off to the best start, but Derry referee Eamonn Cassidy picked flaws in Dublin’s defence for a ten minute spell, leaving Beth Carton to add four scores, three from frees, for Waterford.

Maguire pulled two back from dead balls, Miriam Twomey hit one from a narrow angle, and Siobhan Keogh, from nothing, surrounded by Waterford players, sent a sublime score soaring over the bar to put Dublin’s noses back in front.

Another soft free gave Carton the opportunity to level things with the score at 0-05 each at half time.

Like the beginning of the game, Ali Maguire pointed a free to get the second session started. But the game got quite defensive as both sides flexed their muscle to keep each other’s scoring threats at bay. Eva Marie Elliot, Hannah Hegarty and Leah Butler all put in overtime today in the backs, but it was fouls and frees that won the game for Waterford.

Midfielder Fiona Morrissey made use of the strong wind, sending a long range free high above Grainne Qiunn’s hurl to square the game yet again and Kate McMahon added one more from play to push the Deise’s noses out in front.

Ali Maguire sent Dublin’s second and final point over from free a foul on Siobhan Kehoe. Kehoe herself had a number of opportunities, making some clever runs but Waterford had players back in numbers and were breaking slightly better.

Carton again managed to keep the scoreboard ticking with two more frees. Dublin’s cause wasn’t helped when Eva Marie Elliot collided with Niamh Rockett and the referee decided it was a straight red card for Elliott, and the resulting free was ably scored by Carton.

Rockett was again involved in another incident, this time being fouled by Siobhan Kehoe, who appeared lucky to have only received a yellow card for the high tackle.

Appropriately Beth Carton scored the resulting free just as the referee blew the final whistle, giving Waterford the win.
