Naomh Barrog 6-12
Na Gaeil Óga 1-01
Last Sunday afternoon Parnell’s GAA Club in Coolock hosted the final three We Are Dublin GAA Camogie Club Championship Finals. The first final up for decision was the meeting of Naomh Barrog and Na Gaeil Óga.
Na Gaeil Óga were appearing in their first Senior final which was a great achievement considering the team was only formed last season. But on the day they came up against an experienced Naomh Barrog team and their on fire forward Kate Pepper.
Both teams were evenly matched in the opening minutes but in the eight minute Barrog got up and running with a point from Eve Byrne. Barrog added two further points from Kate Paepper and Aisling Quinn as the Kilbarrack side started to dominate proceedings.
Na Gaeil Óga got their first and only point of the first half eighteen minutes in from Caoimhe Ní Dhálaigh. Barrog though were rampant at this stage and the Na Gaeil Óga defence was under severe pressure from the constant attacks. That pressure told in the nineteenth minute when Tara Mulholland scored the first goal of the contest. Seconds later and Barrog stretched their lead further with an excellent point from Lannah Kelly.
In fairness to the Na Gaeil Óga players they never dropped their heads and battled throughout the game and defender Aoife Ní Laoire led that battle from the back with a player of the match display.
Just before the break though, Naomh Barrog stretched their lead to ten points thanks to a fine goal from Orla Burden and a Kate Pepper point and at the break the score was 2-05 to 0-01 to Barrog.
The second half was much the same with Naomh Barrog dominating possession and were at times just camped in the Na Gaeil Óga half.
The second half belonged to one player, Kate Pepper who hit an impressive 3-05 in the second period.
Inside the opening eight minutes of the second half Barrog had pushed their lead out to thirteen points with a brace of points from Kate Pepper and one from Tara Mulholland.
The game was then put to bed completely by Kate Pepper in a blistering three minute spell. Between the tenth and thirteenth minute Kate hit a brilliant 2-01 with a scintillating display of hurling.
Na Gaeil Óga did raise a cheer from the spectators four minutes later when Caoimhe Ní Dhálaigh finished off some great approach play to the back of the Barrog net.
Unfortunately that was as good as got for Na Gaeil Óga as it was all Naomh Barrog to the finish. Eve Byrne who had an excellent game for Barrog hit their next point and that was quickly followed with two more cracking points from play from the unstoppable Kate Pepper.
With four minutes to go Emma Runswick only minutes on the pitch finished to the net from close range to score Barrog’s fifth goal of the game. And it was left to the player of the second half Kate Pepper to have the last say as she completed her hat-trick of goals and finish the top scorer in the final with a personal tally of 3-07.
