First half goals from Mairead Dillion and Aine Keane paved the way for the Galway Intermediates comprehensive victory
Dublin 0-06
Galway 2-16
Dublin’s young Intermediate Camogie side suffered a sixteen point defeat today to an impressive Galway Intermediates team in the All Ireland Championship.
Galway’s pace, power and slick interplay proved too much for Dublin today in the Trinity Sports Centre in Santry and the game was all but over at half-time thanks in no small measure to goals from Mairead Dillion and Aine Keane.
Dublin struggled throughout the game to create scoring chances and that was reflected on the scoreboard as the Sky Blues finished with a total of just six points with all of those scores coming from placed balls.
Galway started brightly and raced into a four point lead inside the opening seven minutes, two from Aine Keane, one from play and the other from a free and one each from Mariead Dillion and Tara Ruttledge.
In the tenth minute Dublin finally got off the mark with a point from a 45’ scored by Niamh Comerford.
But Galway were dominating possession and a good team move was finished to the net by Mairead Dillion in the twelfth minute to put the side from the West in complete control.
Galway pushed on and added a further unanswered 1-05 before half-time, the points came from Aine Keane(2), Mairead Dillion(2) and Lisa Casserly and the impressive Keane finished another well worked move to the net for Galway’s second goal of the half.
Just before the short whistle Dublin grabbed their second point, a converted free from Niamh Comerford to leave Dublin with a mountain to climb with the half-time score 2-09 to 0-02.
Dublin started brightly on the resumption and reduced the deficit with two Niamh Comerford converted frees.
But it was a short reprieve as Galway hit the next three scores, another successful free attempt from Aine Keane was followed by points from Lisa Casserly and Ava Lynskey.
In the 45th minute Dublin were awarded a free about twenty five yards out in a central position, Niamh Comerford stepped up to take it and drove the ball at the goal, but it was stopped on the line and Galway cleared the ball upfield, were awarded a free of their own which Aine Keane dispatched over the bar.
With eleven minutes left in the game Niamh Comerford knocked over her fifth converted free. Galway again responded with three points in a row from Tegan Canning, Sinead Coleman and Chloe Reilly.
Niamh Comerford grabbed her sixth and the final point of the game from a free in injury time and Dublin could have no complaints at the final whistle at the result with the Galway Intermediates deserving and comfortable winners.
Dublin will now switch their attention to their final group game against Carlow, progression in the Championship may have ended today, but there is still plenty to play for in their next game with the winners securing their Intermediate status for next season and losers facing a relegation play-off.
