Dubs Stars 2-08

The second game to take place on Wednesday in a chilly Parnells GAA club was the Dublin Camogie Senior Dubs Star challenge match.

With a number of 2017 Dublin Senior team playing for the Dub Stars it was expected to be a close tight affair but it didn’t pan out that way.

Dublin dominated for the majority of the game and looked extremely impressive with only a couple of weeks to go to the start of their league campaign.

The Dubs Stars hit the first score of the game a point from Grace O’Shea in the fourth minute. But that was as good as it got for the Dub Stars as Dublin took completely over and scored an unanswered 2-07 to stamp their authority on the game.

Ali Maguire and Emma Flanagan with a point apiece from open play and a Niamh Rock free pushed the girls in blue two in front. Then in the 14th minute Player Of The Match Zoe O’Donoghue scored the first of her three goals of the game to push the Dublin lead out to five.

Four more points followed from Eimear O’Leary with a brace, Ali Maguire and Róisín Baker and with seven minutes to the break O’Donoghue grabbed her second goal as David Herity’s side now led by twelve points.

The Dubs Stars finally hit only their second point of the half in the 25th minute with a pointed free from Orla Beagan.

But Dublin made it a Bakers Dozen with fine points from Ali Twomey and Niamh Rock and even though Arlene Cushin hit a nice point for the Dubs Stars, there looked to be no way back for them with the halftime score 2-09 to 0-03 To Dublin.

The Dubs Stars came flying out of the traps for the second half and had cut the deficit in half by the 42nd minute.

A goal from Aishling Maher in the 34th minute got the ball rolling and was quickly followed with some excellent points from Alex Griffin with two and Maher added to her goal with a well taken shot between the sticks.

But three points in as many minutes from Dublin scored by Niamh Rock from a free and a point a piece from open play from Zoe O’Donoghue and Ali Maguire pushed the lead back out to nine.

With ten minutes to go and their lead cut to eight points thanks to a pointed free from Aoibhe Dillon, Dublin cut loose and put the game beyond the reach of their opponents.

Two goals in as many minutes from Róisín Baker and Zoe O’Donoghue with her third of the contest all but ended the game. Five further points followed in a row from Emma Flanagan and Niamh Rock with a pair apiece and O’Donoghue brought her total to 3-02 with an excellent point.

The Dubs Stars rallied again in the closing minutes hitting the last two scores of the game, a great goal from Grace O’Shea and a point from Aishling Maher.

But in the end Dublin ran out convincing and deserving winners on the day and David Herity’s Squad look primed and ready for their opening League game in the middle of January.
