REBELS FINISH STRONG TO DEFEAT DUBS
CORK 1-15 DUBLIN 0-16
Cork finished well to overcome Dublin and get their Allianz Football League Division 1 campaign off to a winning start in Páirc Uí Rinn.
While Dublin led by 0-15 to 1-11 when Dean Rock got his eighth point in the 55th minute, they would only score once more while Cork built up a head of steam. Frees from Colm O’Neill and Brian Hurley had them level with 10 minutes left and then two well-worked moves were rounded off by Mark Collins and Eoin Cadogan.
Dublin sub Michael Deegan did leave a point in it with a minute remaining, but Cork wing-back Conor Dorman got his second point to secure victory.
Dorman had also been central to Cork’s goal in the 12th minute. While his shot looked to be creeping past Seán Currie, his Bishopstown clubmate and fellow wing-back Jamie O’Sullivan made sure the ball crossed the line.
That put Cork 1-2 to 0-3 in front but then the visitors scored four points on the trot, Rock with two while he also drew a save from Ken O’Halloran. The game ebbed and flowed though and Hurley, O’Neill and Dorman put Cork ahead again by the half-hour.
They remained a point in front at half-time, 1-7 to 0-9 but Eoghan O’Gara and Rock (two) put Dublin in front again. They couldn’t fully take over though, with Ian Maguire and Mark Collins doing well at midfield for Cork.
O’Neill and Hurley tied matters at 1-10 to 0-13 on 53 and while Dublin threatened to pull clear again, Cork found the extra momentum when they needed it.
