HUGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS ATTEND DUBLIN SENIOR CAMOGIE TRIALS.
Tonight in the impressive surroundings of the DCU Sports Campus the new era for Dublin Senior Camogie started with over 90 players togging out for the Senior Camogie trials.
Two full sixty minute trial games were held with every player given a chance to shine and impress new manager Shane O’Brien and his backroom team.
And what a couple of games they were with the best talent in Dublin battling tooth and nail for one of the coveted places on the senior squad.
The players gave their all with none of them willing to take a backwards step as they battled for the ball as if their lives depended on it.
Friendships forged at club and inter county level were put to one side for sixty minutes as players displayed to the large watching crowd and new management team the talent they had to offer.
And what a phenomenal amount of talent there was on show tonight. Both games were played in atrocious conditions with the rain incessantly falling and accompanied by a strong wind which changed direction more times than a Tom-Tom Sat Nav.
But the handling, striking, hooking, blocking and shooting accuracy that the players showed in such poor conditions was unreal. The ball was as slippery as a bar of soap but you wouldn’t have thought so with the impressive handling on display from the players. This was helped by the accuracy of the passing with very few missing there mark.
The one thing that was noticeable was the low wide count which considering the conditions speaks volumes for the high calibre of shooting that was witnessed tonight. William Tell would have struggled to match the accuracy of the players tonight with points coming from all angles and distances from both play and placed balls. There were also a number of cracking goals scored tonight that would have lit up any game at any level.
Added to all of this was the ferocious tackling and blocking from all areas of the pitch which wasn’t for the faint hearted as players showed how much getting a squad place meant to them.
The keepers on show tonight also showed their full array of talents with some fantastic saves, accurate puck outs and high fielding.
It was really great to see so much talent on show tonight and now the difficult job of whittling down the huge number of talented players to a single squad begins for Shane and his backroom team. 2015 is going to be an exciting year for Dublin Senior Camogie.-Nigel
