BALLYBODEN ST. ENDAS ARE 5 IN A ROW SENIOR 1 CAMOGIE CLUB CHAMPIONS.
Ballyboden St. Endas were crowned We Are Dublin Senior 1 Camogie Club Champions Sunday afternoon after defeating St Vincent’s in a low scoring but entertaining game in O’Toole Park on a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-07.
Although low scoring both teams served up an intriguing and entertaining tussle with the result in doubt right up to the final whistle.
Ballyboden St. Endas won the toss and decided to play with the aid of the very strong wind and they began the game the brighter of the two sides. Boden got the scoreboard ticking over with points from Anne Griffin and Denice McGrath.
Vincent’s were dealt a blow after eight minutes when their wing back Lora Smith was shown a straight red card for an off the ball incident. Vins responded two minutes later when Alison Maguire opened the scoring for them.
But Boden hit back with two quick points from the pacy Jill Horan to put Ballyboden three points ahead midway through the half.
Although St.Vincent’s were down to fourteen players they grew into the game led heroically by player of the match Aoife Cullen and they battled fiercely for every single ball. The pressure paid off with three unanswered points, one from play from Emer Dillon,a forty five from Ali Maguire (45) and an Aisling Maher free.
Boden’s Anne Griffin replied with a point to leave the bare minimum between the sides at the break with the scoreline Ballyboden 0-05 Vincents 0-04.
As normally happens when a team has had a player sent off Vincents came out and further upped the ante. They had the better of the early second half exchanges and were rewarded with two points in the opening ten minutes from Aisling Maher and Emer Dillon to take the lead.
But Jill Horan hit her third point of the day to leave the teams level on six points apiece. The next ten or so minutes failed to produce a score from either team even though the two sides had some great passages of play, but both teams defended brilliantly.
With eight minutes left on the clock Aoife Ryan knocked over a point to give Vincents the lead for only the second time in the game.
But a minute later the game changed in Boden’s favour when an Anne Griffin free dropped in around the square and it was deflected into the Vincent’s net.
Mairead Luttrell added another point for Boden two minutes later to give them a three point lead with only 5 minutes left on the clock.
Vincents in fairness to them threw the kitchen sink at Boden in an effort to get the equalising score, with high bomb after high bomb raining down on the Ballyboden backline, but captain Rachel Ruddy along with Susan Kennedy and Orla Smith refused to crumble and they held out to win by 1-07 to 0-07 and Ballyboden completed their fifth Championship Title win in a row.
Both teams are to be commended for serving up a very competitive and entertaining final in difficult conditions and they left everything out on the pitch. -Nigel
